Random Institute is an extension of what a contemporary art institution can be, that is to say, truly unbothered by rules and bureaucracy.
From 2016 until 2019, Random Institute ran the curatorial program of the international contemporary art center Despacio in San José, Costa Rica.

Pairings Series
Pairings combine the words of strangers with images of our own, witnessed separately and reimagined together. This series is part of our digital initiatives to experiment with new formats, new artists, and new publics beyond institutional walls.

Each pairing explores new readings and new ideas rooted in traces of the past. Fragments of text spotted, read, or overheard during our everyday travels are combined with images and reconfigured into visual stories online. This series began in 2018 and will continue until we run out of thoughts, photos, films or ideas. Every now and then it features guests contributors we deeply admire.
