The 23 weakest ideas on our list will be printed on water-soluble, fully biodegradable paper and handed to Sophie Lapalu and Fabrice Gallis, who will take them out to sea. Instead of deleting them from our digital list as we usually do, these surplus ideas will be thrown overboard and see the light of day – if only for a moment. An exhibition about 23 exhibitions that will never take place.
Instructions for crew on board:
Each day you sail, throw one of our ideas overboard until you run out. Take a picture of the paper in the air before it hits the water and begins to dissolve.
The Weight of Ideas will be a contribution to an artistic project by Sophie Lapalu and Fabrice Gallis, who will embark on a journey across the English Channel on a 7.60 meter-long sailboat called Kassumay, searching for a public for art in harbors along the way. More about the project can be found on their official website.
Kassumay will set sail from the port of Cherbourg mid-July 2019 and is slated to reach Saint-Nazaire around August 20, 2019. Sophie Lapalu and Fabrice Gallis invited some 20 artists and non-artists to send them works, ideas, or instructions to follow on their trip.
Update: On October 2021 Sophie Lapalu and Fabrice Gallis published a book called [embed] journal about their journey on the sailboat Kassumay with the publisher aroundpress (ISBN 979-10-95517-02-3). Congratulations on the beautiful book designed by ana crews.
