What happens when someone thinks about an artist they fancy, for 24 consecutive nights, just before falling asleep? Well, nobody really knows, so we tried it out. Like dreams, the publication remains inaccessible to most readers as it was sent to a far away library nestled in Uganda.
Perhaps only a dream away.
A curated composition of the images and thoughts that surfaced in the curator‘s dreams when thinking of one artist over 24 nights shortly before falling asleep was published in 2013 and entitled Extravagant Dreams. The unique specimen juxtaposes works of art as well as non-art objects and contemporary artifacts that originate from earlier encounters with the artist against the curator's dream imagery, for the objective of creating a coherent narrative out of dissonance.
As part of the project, we selected a library based on the publication's content where the book will remain, creating yet another sort of distance between Random Institute's audience and the curator's account. Extravagant Dreams was shipped to the first women-only university in Uganda and is kept with their library holdings.
The publication is divided into 24 nights, titled:
NIGHT 1.Twisted last second, before she left. NIGHT 2. Everything will be ok in the end. If it is not ok, then its not the end. NIGHT 3. Daily struggle to make sense of this moment in history. NIGHT 4. Sharpening Fantasy. NIGHT 5. History isn‘t made in rear view mirrors. NIGHT 6. Lonely Girls, not today. NIGHT 7. There is no longer a fixed formula. NIGHT 8. Another hipster bites the dust. NIGHT 9. Horizons don’t go anywhere. NIGHT 10. Confirmed by some of the finest minds in the field. NIGHT 11. It‘s about the magic and money. NIGHT 12. Praise in the face was an open disgrace. NIGHT 13. Are you happy? NIGHT 14. Chillin‘ like a villain. NIGHT 15. The artist is beyond judgment. NIGHT 16. Where will your curiosity take you? NIGHT 17. Oddly banal mysteries. NIGHT 18. No stranger to controversy. NIGHT 19. Inspiration is nonjudgmental. NIGHT 20. A dancer walking for a living. NIGHT 21. Point made. NIGHT 22. Flow of Passion and the Collapse of Reality. NIGHT 23. This moment stays in your mind forever if you are smart enough. NIGHT 24. You may delay.
The publication was released on November 28, 2013 on the occasion of imaginary exhibitions in the dreams of the curator and is stored at the ARU Library in Uganda.
